What is a Foster Family?

You probably know several families who fall into this description even if they don't think of themselves this way. How many couples do you know who are raising children their partners had when they got married? Raising a child who is not your biological offspring is the simplest form of being a foster parent.

In formal terms a foster family is one where the adults have taken training to be sure their skills are up to handling some of the problems a child may have. A home evaluation has been done to be sure that the child will be cared for in a clean and safe environment and that the parents have the resources to provide care. This doesn't mean you must be rich. On the contrary, most foster parents are just average people who work and pay their bills. You will get a small daily allowance check when you accept a foster child but no one expects to be able to quit working or to get rich being a foster parent.

Are you wondering if you could be a foster parent.

These are the two biggest reason's to make a home for a child that needs what you can offer. Open your heart today and you can change a life forever.

Are you concerned about who lives in your neighborhood?

Part of being a good parent is knowing what dangers to warn your children about. We live in a very mobile society where people move around constantly. Do you wonder who the person is that moved in near you or your child's school? What about near your elderly residents?

Is this person a sex offender trying to get away from the notoriety of their crime? They have to tell the police if they are but so far no one has to tell you. You can find out for yourself, today, if a new threat has decided that your community is a good place for them to live.

Foster Parenting Differences

All foster parents must complete initial training and follow up with continuing education classes to maintain their certification. Therapeutic foster parents will also take a little more training to start.

Foster Parents have children placed with them by the Department of Human Services. Therapeutic Foster Parents work with private agencies to provide higher levels of care for smaller numbers of children. The private agencies accept children from the Department of Human Services and place them in therapeutic foster homes. These agencies arrange for the training of therapeutic foster parents. Usually, no more than two children will be in a therapeutic foster home.

If you are already a foster parent or are interested in becoming a therapeutic foster parent we can put you in touch with an agency to answer your questions. I want some more information. I promise your private information will stay private and you won't get SPAM from us or them.

Life Book Pages

We've created some pages that your children can use for their life books each month. These are in PDF format so will print correctly no matter what computer system you are using.

Each page will have questions for the child to answer; questions you can talk about with the child; a coloring spot, connect-the-dot, or maze for the child to complete. These are designed for the younger children but we'll have pages for the older ones here soon.

Your suggestions for subject matter are welcomed as are your artwork and cartoons.
